NSW Government Snubs WU SHU Delegation

As reported in mainstream and Chinese language media the NSW Government was recently involved in one of the most ill-conceived snubs of a senior Chinese Government Sports Delegation. As the Sydney Morning Herald reported:

A FEW days ago Kevin Greene was dozing in Parliament. Now he is accused of being asleep at the wheel of his whole portfolio.
The Chinese vice-president of the International Olympic Committee might have expected a warm reception from the Sports Minister when he was proposing that NSW bid for a huge sporting event that would attract 90 countries and 2500 competitors to the state.
Considering the Premier, Nathan Rees, just this week boasted about securing the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Zaiqing Yu and his delegation were surprised that no one from the Government seemed keen to discuss hosting the kung fu world championships in 2011.

Quite a snub, seeing kung fu is the national sport of China and the world championships are one of the most significant sporting events for China.
Walt Missingham, the president of the Australian Kung Fu Federation, said he was disappointed that Mr. Greene did not find someone in the Government to meet one of the most powerful men in world sport.
"This is a Government saying they want events out at Homebush but if … they were serious about attracting events, surely he would have asked another minister or staff member to meet Mr Yu," Mr Missingham said.

"Then I look in the paper and see Mr Greene has been asleep in Parliament so that just shows how busy he has been this week, busy falling asleep in Parliament."

The Opposition sports spokesman, Kevin Humphries, said Mr Greene was "asleep at the wheel".
"Jobs would be created and millions of dollars spent in NSW. During a time we are heading into an economic downturn, this is exactly the sort of event the State Government should be chasing."
